It is not “taking over because the processed failed.” It is showing up because the conditions it is built for are present.
Why you’re seeing more of it now – August 2026
Two things stacked:
- A lot of rain — Charlie is mint family. Those plants are moisture specialists. They run on stolons across a wet surface, drop roots, and drink excess water.
- Heat on top of wet — grass gets stressed, especially if it’s cut short. Charlie handles that better than turf. Warm + wet = fast runners.
So the flush you’re seeing is seasonal and conditional, not a new soil type overnight.
What it’s doing (its actual job)
- Covering soil that stays damp
- Opening the surface a little with roots
- Using extra moisture
- Holding ground where grass thinned or couldn’t breathe
When infiltration and grass density catch up, it loses that job. It does not vanish in one season, especially after heavy rain years.
What actually slows it
Not spray. The same things you’ve been saying:
- Cut over 3 inches and skip a cut when it’s this wet/hot
- Don’t scalp edges
- Keep Nature’s Brew going (biology + silica + amino acids/squid juice)
- Carbon (PUC) on the wet/compacted spots
- Water only when the soil actually needs it — not because the top looks dry for a day
Creeping Charlie is a mid-succession, wet-soil mint. Rain + heat pushed it. That’s expected. It declines when the turf is taller, the soil takes water instead of ponding it, and density comes back. It will look worse before it looks better in a wet year. That’s the stage, not the end of the process.
