In a 2020 episode of the Regenerative Agriculture Podcast, John Kempf interviewed Dr. James White, and the conversation was a revelation. White explained something the conventional lawn care industry has never understood: plants are farms for soil microbes. They absorb entire bacteria and fungi whole, extract nutrients from their cells, and in doing so, can transform potential pathogens into beneficial endophytes. This is the rhizophagy cycle—root-eating—and it’s how plants naturally manage disease.

Take Fusarium as the perfect example. In a healthy, diverse soil teeming with bacteria and fungi, Fusarium is an endophyte—a quiet resident living inside the plant without causing harm. It’s part of the system. But when soil biology is disrupted—by tillage, salt fertilizers, or synthetic sprays—the balance collapses. The microbial community that keeps Fusarium in check disappears, and suddenly that same organism becomes a pathogen, causing wilt, rot, or disease. The plant isn’t “sick”; the soil is dead.

White’s research shows plants actively cultivate microbes at the root tip, internalize them, pull out nutrients (up to 30% or more in some cases), and eject them back into the soil to recharge. Healthy plants with high Brix and balanced biology are naturally resistant. Insects and diseases target weak, unbalanced plants. A strong, living soil system keeps everything in check—no silver bullet needed.

The conventional industry doesn’t know this. They want the magic wand, the quick spray, the chemical fix. They sell you the idea that disease is a random attack to be blasted away, not a symptom of dead soil. They’re still stuck in 1840s NPK thinking, ignoring 2026 science. They don’t measure biology. They don’t understand endophytes. They just sell more poison.

At Stangl’s Enviro Lawn Care, we’ve been applying this understanding since I fully transitioned to regenerative in 2015. Nature’s Brew—our signature microbial blend—delivers the living diversity that turns potential pathogens into allies. From front-door lawns to farms, vineyards, orchards, and sports fields, we build the same soil system that naturally suppresses disease. No sprays. No silver bullets. Just living soil doing what it’s designed to do.

The industry sells a lie: “Spray to kill the problem.”
We say the truth: “Feed the soil, and the problem disappears.

”Your lawn is a living system. Let it thrive.
